Most manufacturers add softeners to the towels so they appear nice and soft. However after a few washes, these towels may start to feel course and rough.
Cotton fibers naturally attract water and can hold almost 25 times its weight in liquid. However, most towels are made of cotton, but the look and feel of towels largely depends on the type of cotton used. Towels designed and priced for everyday use are typically made of standard cotton, while the more expensive Egyptian cotton towels have a much longer threads, allowing each towel to have more moisture absorbing loops per inch.
The number and the length of loops is also an important factor in choosing the right towel. The denser the loops, the more absorbent the towel will be so check the stitch for thick, tightly packed loops. If however you can see the base of the towel, then this is an indicator of a poor quality towel. The key to the longevity of a towel is for the hems to be double stitched all the way around the edges of the towel.
This extra reinforcement reduces fraying and will give your bath towels a longer life. The best way to judge the quality of a towel is to hold it.
In most cases, they are also more expensive. A low GSM bath towel will be lightweight, coarse, and unabsorbent; using this type of towel is an unpleasant experience and not effective for drying off. A towel in the to GSM range is considered mid-weight, but still of high quality. These towels offer consistent, reliable performance and a wonderful feel; they are soft and absorbent without being too heavy. This means they can air dry relatively quickly, and can easily be washed and dried in a regular load.
A towel of GSM and above is considered heavy weight. These towels have a sumptuous, extravagant, soft towel feel, and are an investment. They are hefty, highly absorbent, and rich in depth and feel.
High GSM towels are better at absorbing dyes during the manufacturing process, so are often available in a wider or more interesting choice of colors along with traditional white and ivory. Because of their weight, towels with high GSM take longer to hang dry, and usually must be washed in a smaller load by themselves. Dry Time. Under GSM. Light, flimsy. Not absorbent. Coarse and uncomfortable. Mid-weight, hefty. Very absorbent.
Soft and fluffy. Average, relatively easy to wash and dry. Heavy weight, spa-like. Super absorbent. Softest feel, plush and opulent. In all cases, quality cotton bath towels should be laundered with care to keep them looking and feeling great.
At Fine Linen and Bath, we offer a specific set of guidelines that include using a fabric wash specially formulated for fine linens; avoiding fabric softener; washing and drying carefully; and refreshing towels when needed with a regimen using one wash with white vinegar and a second wash of baking soda. Beyond just GSM, another essential variable to consider is the quality of the cotton from which a towel is woven. The finest towels in the world—and many of the lines we carry -- are made from either Giza cotton famous for it extra long staple cotton fibres or Supima cotton also referred to as pima cotton , specialty long-staple cottons that come from Egypt and the United States, respectively.
